It is necessary for everybody to know the meaning of citizenship before apply for a passport. Majority of people travel on a normal or standard passport and the procedure for obtaining a passport is similar in almost every country. For obtaining a passport, an application form needs to be completed. Before completing an application process, it is essential that citizenship is established.
The Oxford dictionary tells us the easy meaning of the term citizenship as member of a state or common-wealth, either native or naturalized or an inhabitant of a city or a free man of a city. One person can get only one citizenship and can hold only one passport at a time.
Citizenship usually means one of the following :
- person born in the country
- parents born in the country
- citizenship granted through naturalization
- citizenship granted through marriage
- citizenship granted by honour or invitation
However, there will be variations to the above and the issuing authorities will give details for what applies in their country. An applicant must provide an evidence of citizenship either in the form of birth certificates, parents birth certificate, if citizenship is by descent or naturalization papers if applicable. If an applicant’s name has changed since birth (for example : married woman) then evidence showing the change of the applicant’s name must also be produced.
