Can Vacationers Avoid Sleeping With Bed Bugs When They Travel?

Author: Dorothy Yamich  /  Category: Hotels

Even the best of luxurious five-star hotels and resorts can on occasion get an infestation of bed bugs. This can be sometimes be unavoidable as hundreds and even thousands of travelers and tourists can be staying at a hotel or resort at any given time. These tiny blood drinking critters can easily hitch a ride on unsuspecting travelers or hide in their luggage. Hotel and resort managers alike are very aware of this possible problem and do their best to prevent this from happening.

What do these blood sucking pests look like?

Bedbugs are very tiny, flat, wingless bugs. Their size can vary from a head of a pin to about one-quarter of an inch in length when fully mature. They have an oval shape and look like small watermelon seeds. Their color can vary from a translucent yellow to a dark reddish brown. If they have just dined on a traveler’s blood they may appear dark brown or black in color.

How easy are they to find?

Most travelers are not aware of bed bugs until they see the red bite marks on their bodies and start scratching their itchy wounds. Bed bugs can be extremely difficult to find if the infestation is light. Their eggs are very tiny and about the size of a grain of rice which are even harder to observe. To make matters worse they tend to be nocturnal so they are waking up and looking for a blood breakfast when most vacationers are going to sleep.

When you check into your room it is advisable to roll all the bed sheets, blankets and comforters down to see if you can find any bed bugs. A tell tale sign they’re around are dark fecal spots or drops of dried blood on the linen, pillowcases, or in the seams around the mattress or box springs. You also may find what look like to be shells of bed bugs which are in fact the skins that they shed when they’re maturing. If you can find any sign of their presence, phone down to the front desk and ask for another room. You may be able to get a decent discount on your room for the upsetting experience and inconvenience.

Bed bugs do not reflect on the cleanliness of hotels and resorts. These insects do not eat crumbs or dirt, or anything we may associate with unsanitary hotel room conditions. They only feed on blood. In terms of a vacationer’s health, current research indicates that these insects do not appear to spread disease even though they can harbor well over twenty-five different pathogens

Not everybody gets bed bug bites. Sometimes, if there’re two travelers sleeping in the same bed, only one may be bitten. However, bed bugs never discriminate. If they have a chance they’ll gladly dine on anyone’s blood. Bedbugs are attracted to the warmth of our bodies and the carbon dioxide we exhale when we breathe. They also emit chemicals to attract and find each other. These night crawlers are fast and great climbers. They can silently tag along in a traveler’s luggage or on their clothing.

What can you do to avoid these pests when traveling on your holidays?

Unfortunately, apart from checking out the bed linen, mattress and box springs, bed frames, the bed’s headboard, any upholstered furniture, and along baseboards in your hotel room, that’s about all you can do.

Bed bugs are a universal problem and can be found in motels, hostels, bed and breakfasts, hotels, resorts, pod hotels, hospitals, airplanes, trains, buses, cabs, cruise ships, etc. These tiny blood suckers can be located near any readily available source of blood, like tired travelers. Bed bugs can also hitch a ride home with you, turning your home sweet home into a living hell.

What can you do to get rid of bed bugs?

You should leave the job to a professional pest control company as these pests are very difficult to get rid of. It’s expensive and can take time treating an infestation of bed bugs which usually involves using steam and pesticides. This process may have to be repeated a number of times before the very hot steam and pesticides kill all of them. Keep in mind that the insects must come into direct contact with the hot steam and pesticides for these tactics to be totally effective.

As for your home, prevention is a lot easier and far less costly than the cure. In your home, you do not have to throw your mattress and box springs out. You should cover your mattress and box springs with zippered plastic coverings which will stop bedbugs from hiding in the cracks and crevices of your mattress. Zippered plastic pillow protectors are just as effective for your pillows. This prevents any possible bedbugs that are on the inside from getting out. At the same time it will stop any new infestations from getting in, eliminating the bed as a problem. However, this is only one part of ridding the house of bed bugs. You will still have to apply steam and pesticides to any areas of the home where they might be hiding.

There is a new and exciting product that appears very promising for monitoring and eliminating bed bugs. It’s the NightWatch Bedbug Trap designed by Bio Sensory, Inc.. This small and easy to use product has a kairomone, carbon dioxide, and a heat lure that traps and efficiently kills bed bugs. Under a monitored field test their product captured and killed more than a thousand bed bugs. The company’s website, Biosensory.com, will give you more information on their product.

Porthleven Cornwall: The historic fishing village

Author: Mike Carter  /  Category: Hotels

The historic village of Porthleven, Cornwall is the most southerly working harbour in mainland UK. The harbour exists today due to HMS Anson being wrecked on Loe Bar on December 29th 1807. Tobias Roberts, a hero that day, swam through stormy seas out to the Anson. A rope was tied around Tobias enabling him to create an escape route for those on board. Although he successfully reached the ship, over one hundred crew perished including the ship’s Captain Lydiard.

Appalled by the loss of life, Tobias Roberts battled with Admiralty and locals alike to ensure there was a harbour of safe refuge to avoid such an incident in the future.. Being a man of determination Porthleven Harbour was constructed and then improved at a later date. It took two acts of Parliament before the harbour became what it is today, home to a much reduce number of fishermen, no commercial traffic of any size and small number of pleasure craft.

However, the harbour still plays a big role enticing tourists from all around the world. The media gave a lot of attention to Porthleven when it was lashed by a hurricane in December 1989. The coverage on the television was televised all over the world, with pictures showing the demolishing storm with its huge eaves throwing shingle and seaweed over 22 meters (72 feet). That’s the height of the clock tower in Porthleven. TV and film crews have been to Porthleven over the years, with programme makers helping to promote Porthleven’s natural unspoilt attractions.

Whilst serving on the local council in the early 1990’s it became clear that the economic future of Porthleven would become more dependent on holiday trade. Following this idea, Porthleven’s first commercial website was established which continues to attract visitors from around the world. The annual Discover Porthleven leaflet was produced to help publicise the village in addition to tourists signs being introduced.

Porthleven has a number of quality self catering cottages, B&B and hotels situated around the harbour, above the beach and within the village. Many accommodate commanding views of the bay, the harbour or surrounding countryside. The village also has a small drop in caravan and camp site. Porthleven has three Inns, the oldest being the Ship Inn. In these you will discover good food, good ale and friendly locals. According to local legend and the BBC the Ship has a few resident ghosts.

There are a variety of places to eat such as The Blue Haze Restaurant a recent asset to the village and quickly building an excellent reputation with both locals and visitors alike. Kota Restaurant and B&B located on the harbour head produces a well presented and varied menu. Both restaurants have chefs with a passion for cooking local sourced food. In addition there are two fish and chip shops, a Chinese take-away. Real Cornish Pasties from the Horse and Jockey Bakery (we believe these are the best in Cornwall) and then there is Nauti but Ice where visitors can sit and watch the fishing boats whilst consuming a variety of ice creams and other mouth watering treats.
